2012 holds a lot of importance in the gadget world because Microsoft is
going to officially launch their new Windows 8 operating system by the
end of this month. The Windows 8 operating system is a completely
redesigned platform that comes with touch functionality.
The launch of this new operating system from Microsoft means that all the upcoming devices that operate on Windows 8 will also be out in the market. Around 20 tablets and hybrids (tablet cum notebook) are lined up to hit the market; read on to know more about all these upcoming devices.
1. Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11
Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11 is the company’s first hybrid device which is powered with NVIDIA Tegra 3 Quad-Core ARM processor and runs on Windows RT operating system. The Windows RT OS is a separate version for Windows 8 OS for ARM powered devices.
The IdeaPad Yoga 11 sports an 11.6 inch touchscreen display which flips backwards completely to become a tablet. This hybrid offers up to 13 hours of battery life and weighs 1.27 kg. It is expected to be available somewhere in December at a starting price of around 42,000.
2. Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13
Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 is the bigger version of IdeaPad Yoga 11 and comes in a screen size of 13.3 inch touch screen display. The design of this hybrid is also similar to the previous IdeaPad Yoga 11, can be used as tablet or notebook.
It is powered with third generation Intel's Core processor based on the Ivy Bridge microarchitecture and runs on Windows 8 operating system (not Windows RT). The device weighs 1.5 kg and has a battery backup up to 8 hours and also expected to hit market sometime in December at a starting price of around 58,000.
3. Lenovo IdeaTab Lynx
Lenovo IdeaTab Lunx is a tablet that comes with a screen size of 11.6 inch touchscreen display. It is purely a tablet and doesn’t have any hybrid design, but comes with (optional) detachable keyboard dock which makes it used as notebook.
The tablet is powered with a Dual-Core Intel Atom processor (Clover Trail) and runs on Window 8 operating system. It weighs only 640 grams and offers 16 hours of battery life. As other Lenovo device this is also expected in the month of December with an expected price of 31,600 and the optional keyboard will be available for around 7,900.
4. Lenovo ThinkPad Twist
Lenovo ThinkPad Twist is said to be designed for professionals and the company called it as a business ready device. The ThinkPad Twist can be used as ultrabook and we can twist the screen to switch to a convertible tablet.
It comes with 12.5 inch touchscreen display, powered with Intel Core processor (Ivy Bridge) and funtions with Windows 8 Pro operating system. The ThinkPad Twist offers storage up to 500 GB HDD or 128 GB SSD. It has a expected price tag of 44,900.
5. Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2
Lenovo launched this hybrid device at their 20th anniversary ThinkPad event which happed in August, 2012. The ThinkPad Tablet 2 is the first tablet which runs Windows 8 Professional OS and is powered by a next-gen Intel Atom processor.
The ThinkPad Tablet 2 sports a 10.1 inch touch screen at a resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels, 8 megapixel rear camera, 2 megapixel front camera, optional keyboard dock and for connectivity it has Wi-Fi, optional AT&T LTE and 3G and optional NFC. It is expected to be price at 34,300.
6. Asus Vivo Tab RT
As the name suggest the Asus Vivo Tab RT runs on Windows RT operating system and powered by Nvidia Tegra 3 Quad-Core processor, 2 GB of RAM. It comes with 10.1-inch "Super IPS+" display and also has 8-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front camera and a stylus. It also comes with 32 GB of internal storage and Office 2013. The availability is not yet disclosed, but is expected to be priced at 31,600.
7. Asus Vivo Tab
The Vivo Tab will run on Windows 8 and will sport an 11.6 inch touch screen at a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. The device will be powered by Intel Atom Z2760 processor, 2 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. It will also have 8-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front camera, Office 2013 trail and a stylus. The availability is not yet disclosed, but is expected to be cost 42,200.
8. Asus Taichi
Asus Taichi is one of the most interesting and coolest tablets showcased at Computex 2012. The Taichi sports two screens; both LED backlit and IPS paneled with Full HD resolution. The one which is on the cover is a touchscreen which act as a tablet when closed and when the lid is open the outer touchscreen display will switch off and the device transforms into a standard notebooks.
The company claims that you can use both the screens as they share the same hardware. The device is powered with Intel third generation Ivy Bridge CPU, has SSD for storage and comes with 11.6 inch and 13.3 inch screens size models. The pricing starts from 68,600.
9. Samsung Ativ Tab
Samsung Ativ Tab is a Windows RT slate which runs on a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Dual-Core processor and is backed by a 2 GB RAM. The Ativ Tab sports a 10.1-inch display which has 1,366 x 768-pixel resolution.
The tablet comes with 5.0 mega pixel rear camera with LED flash and a 1.9 mega pixel front facing camera which enables the user to make video calls. The device weighs around 570g and comes with a maximum thickness of 8.9mm. It will be available in two memory variants - 32 GB and 64 GB. The tablet is expected to be priced at 39,100.
10. Samsung Ativ Smart PC
Samsung Ativ Smart PC is a hybrid device, comes with 11.6 inch touch screen display at a resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels. The hybrid from Samsung weighs 750g and is 9.9 mm thick. The device is powered by a new Intel Atom Quad Core Z2760 Processor and functions on Windows 8 operating system.
Like the other Samsung devices the Smart PC also comes with a stylus. The stylus makes it easier to take notes and navigate through the menus. No price details yet.
11. Samsung Ativ Smart PC Pro
The Samsung Ativ Smart PC Pro has similar design as the previous Ativ Smart PC but comes with more powerful processor. It is powered with Intel Core i5 processor and functions on Windows 8 operating system.
Like Ativ Smart PC Pro it also features a detachable keyboard docking system and comes with S Pen like in popular smartphone Samsung Galaxy Note smartphone. Furthermore it features USB 3.0, mini-HDMI, microSD card slot, two USB 2.0, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. No price details yet.
12. Acer Iconia W510
Acer Iconia W510 sports a 10.1 inch screen with a full HD 10.1 inch IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1280 pixels. It is powered with mobile-optimized Intel Atom Z2760 processor and functions on Windows 8 operating system.
It comes in a convertible form factor; it can be used with standard tablet style, turns into a laptop when docked with a detachable keyboard and runs in a presentation mode if you rotate it 295 degrees with the dock.
The device also features SIM card slot, USB 2.0 port, MicroSD slot, MicroUSB, HDMI ports and gives 18 hours of battery life when used with keyboard. The tablet is expected to be priced around 27,000 for 32 GB model and around 40,000 for 64 GB version.
13. Acer Iconia W700
Acer Iconia W700 is an 11.6 inch tablet which comes with a full HD 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution touchscreen display and has a special cradle which lets you position the device at 70 degrees for landscape viewing and 20 degrees for touch use.
The device comes in two processor variant; Intel Core i5 processor at a clock speed of 1.7 GHz and Intel Core i3 processor at 1.8 clock speed. Both variant runs on Windows 8 operating system.
Furthermore, it can be used vertically like a portrait for easy browsing and reading. It also has three USB 3.0 ports for expansion. The tablet features Dolby home theater audio, three USB 3.0 ports and the company promises that the device gives 8 hours of battery life. The starting price of this device is expected to be around 42,000.
14. HP Envy X2
HP Envy X2 is a hybrid device comes with an 11.6 inch IPS touch screen which has a resolution of 1366 X 768 pixels and has a detachable keyboard which lets you switch the device into to a tablet and ultrabook. It is powered with Intel Atom-based Clover Trail processor and functions on Windows 8 operating system.
The device also comes with Beats Audio which makes the device one of the best to enjoy music and videos. The device sports an 8 megapixel rear camera, a HD (720p) front camera, has SSD storage, supports NFC and comes with an optional stylus to make the full usage of Microsoft Window 8 Metro interface. The price has not been announced yet.
15. Sony Vaio Duo 11
Sony Vaio Duo 11 is a hybrid device, the keyboard cannot be detached but has to slide back to use it as a tablet. It is powered with Intel Core processor and functions on Windows 8 operating system. It has a screen size of 11.6 inch at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and generates sharp and clear images as well as text.
The hybrid device weighs 1.3 kg and comes in two internal variants; 128 GB and 256 GB along with a slot for a microSD card that would boost up the memory up to 32 GB. It is expected to be priced at 58,000.
16. Sony Vaio E14A Laptop
Sony Vaio E14A is purely a Laptop with no hybrid kind of design. The device runs on Windows 8 operating system and costs at 74,990. The Vaio E14A Series has a stylish ‘wrap design’ with color intonation around the laptop’s edge, touchpad and keyboard. The gadget also comes with a ‘personalization kit’ which includes matching color keyboard skin and mouse
17. Sony Vaio T Series Ultrabook
The next Window 8 ready device from Sony is the Vaio T Series Ultrabook which costs 64,990. The new Vaio T Series Ultrabook will be available in two screen sizes - 11.6 and 13.3 inch and they would feature Ethernet, VGA, USB 3.0, USB 2.0 and HDMI ports.
18. Toshiba Satellite U925T Tablet
Satellite U295T is a hybrid device (laptop cum tablet). The device comes with a huge 12.5 inch screen which features Gorilla Glass which will make the device stronger. The device features a full sized keyboard that slides out when you want to use it as a laptop and you can slide it back and it will function like a tablet.
The keyboard comes with back light which will make typing on it easy during night. Satellite U295t will be powered by an Intel i5 core processor and has 128GB solid state drive (SSD). The device will weigh at least 6 kg. It has a 3 mega pixel rear camera and a front facing camera as well. If the rumors are anything to believe then this hybrid device will cost somewhere around 55,000.
19. Dell XPS 12
The Dell XPS 12 is a hybrid device (tablet cum ultrabook). The XPS Duo 12 comes with a huge 12.5 inch Full HD multi touch display which has a resolution of 1920 X 1080 pixels. The gadget is a swiveling Windows 8 device that can be converted from an ultrabook to a tablet and back again quiet easily.
It comes with 3rd Generation Intel Core i5-3317U processor, 4 GB Dual Channel DDR3 RAM, Intel HD 4000 video card, and 128 GB of SSD. The device is expected to be priced around 63,000.
20. Microsoft Surface Tablet
Microsoft announced two Surface Tablets; for both Intel and ARM processor. The high-end Surface tablet is powered with Intel Core processor and runs Windows 8 operating system.
While Microsoft Surface RT will operate on Windows RT operating system which will be powered by Nvidia Quad-Core Tegra 3 ARM processor. It comes with a 10.6 inch touchscreen with 1280x720 resolution, an, and up to 64 GB storage.
Microsoft will be releasing their Surface tablets soon after they launch their Windows 8 operating system i.e., on October 26rd.
