The Naval Warfare Surface Center in Crane, Indiana has revealed a smartphone app
that lets them recreate environments from your phone. The app, called
PlaceRaider, can run in the background of any smartphone running Android
2.3.
It takes photos at random while recording the orientation and location of the phone. The photos are sent back to a central server, where they can be reconstructed in order to get an idea of where the phone has physically been and see what is happening there. Perfect to see into a bad guys base of operations.
The app could be running in the background and revealing private information without the user knowing. It’s running on Android, but iOS and Windows Phone shouldn’t be a problem. Be careful about the apps you install, I guess.
