Samsung Kies is a freeware software application used to communicate between Windows or Macintosh computers with Samsung Android mobile phone and tablet computer devices, usually using a USB cable connection or though wireless LAN Kies connectivity for some devices. Samsung Kies software uses MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) mode to talk to your Android device. Enabling USB debugging setting changes your android device to use USB transfer mode.


Samsung Kies is Samsung’s official tool for Android based devices which allows you to manage music and videos. If you have both a PC and a Samsung mobile device, it’s an essential application. Samsung Kies also allows you to receive and install Firmware updates for your Samsung mobile and is regularly updated to be compatible with the latest Samsung mobile releases. In addition, Samsung Kies also works for transferring and managing contacts and calendar events between your mobile device and Mac.
Here is the Tutorial How to Check and  Update Galaxy S3 Firmware ViaSamsung Kies: 

Step 1: Download and Install and install Samsung Kies on your computer.
Step 2: After you have installed Kies, connect your device to your PC.
Step 3: If this is your first time connecting your Galaxy Note to your PC, let the PC install all the necessary drivers.
Step 4: Once all the drivers for your device has been installed, Kies should connect to your automatically.
Step 5: Once your device is connected to Kies, Go to “Basic Information” option and the software should prompt you that there is an update available and will as to begin the update.
Step 6: Click “Update” to begin the process and follow follow the instructions on your screen. Do not disconnect the Galaxy Note until update is complete.
